Scholarship - The Memorial Fund

07/10/2009 // During the nearly 40 years The Memorial Fund has existed, we have awarded more than 1000 scholarships to foreign students for one year at a Norwegian folk high school. This scholarship was established to promote cultural exchange between foreign countries and the Norwegian folk high schools. From 2010 The Memorial Fund will close down, so the academic year 2010-11 will be the last year of scholarships. This year we will award 18 scholarships. Students from all countries can apply.

Folk High Schools

Learning for life sums up the folk high school experience. Folk high schools are one-year boarding schools offering a variety of exciting non-traditional and non-academic subjects, as well as academic subjects. The idea of folk high schools is learning for life, an opportunity to grow both individually, socially, and academically in small learning communities where all students live on campus in close contact with staff and their fellow students. One important part of the folk high school experience is to form a community, a common bond within the student body, in class and out of class.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must be between 18 and 22 years old.
A successful applicant will answer all the questions on the application form, providing information about education, motivation for application and participation in a broad area of activities, preferably with some kind of documentation/references. The reference may be written by a teacher, a priest, a coach etc. and it should say something about you as a person. It would be of great help to the Memorial Fund Office when deciding who will receive a scholarship.

What Does The Scholarship Funding Cover?

The Scholarship will cover food, lodging and some excursions. There is no tuition fee in Norwegian folk high schools, but students who are accepted need to bring money for books and teaching materials.

Possible Additional Financial Aid

Both a travel grant and some pocket money can be awarded in addition to the ordinary scholarship. Only those applicants with limited funds should apply for additional financial aid, because it is granted based on means test.
